Yoruba Indigenes Foundation hails Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy
…Calls for regional government
CITIZENS COMPASS – President of Yoruba Indigenes Foundation (YIF), Dr Olumide Aderibole, on Saturday, hailed the supreme court pronouncement, which favours direct allocation of resources and full financial autonomy for the 774 local governments in Nigeria.
In a press statement signed by Mr Sanjo Olawuyi, YIF Director of Communications and Strategies, Aderibole applauded President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for not taking undue advantage of the anomalies in the funding process of the 774 local governments.
According to YIF, “This move is an empirical inference that President Tinubu is a grass root politician, who is empathetic for the commoners and masses.
“It is a landmark judgement, which had succeeded in adding another layer of trust in the new hope agenda of President Tinubu.
“YIF urges the appropriate local government regulatory agencies to institute cognate monitoring mechanisms and enforce accountability of the local government executive.members.
“Direct local government funding should not be seen as business as usual.
“The synopsis of this phenomenal judicial pronouncement is that, it will catalyse grass root development and serve as an impetus for democratic growth among commoners across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.
“In conclusion, the Yoruba Indigenes Foundation, is making use of this judicial pronouncement, to call on the two arms of government at the center “the executive and the legislature” to fast track all the processes and the legal prerequisites, that will institute, establish and install Regional System of government in Nigeria.”
