Traffic Ambassadors complement traffic control in Ikorodu

CITIZENS COMPASS – A group of volunteers under the aegis of Radio Nigeria Bond 92.9FM Traffic Ambassadors on Monday, January 6, 2025, embarked on an early morning traffic control as a way of ensuring free flow of traffic within Ikorodu area of the Lagos State.

The gesture whqqqßich was aimed to complement the efforts of traffic agencies to ease traffic congestion in the area was led by its Chairman, Alhaji Wahab Ogunji popularly known as Olori Odo.

The Traffic Ambassadors arrived at Ikorodu Garage as early as 5a.m to commence the day’s exercise which covered Benson, Garage, Sabo and Lagos Road as many road users commended the efforts of these volunteers.

Spokesperson, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofik, who was physically present at Ikorodu has since lauded the efforts of these traffic ambassadors on behalf of his General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

Speaking shortly after the exercise, Ogunji attributed lack of motor parks and garages in Ikorodu as a major factor hampering free flow of traffic in the area.

He attributed other factors as roadside trading, lawlessness of some commercial drivers and activities of street urchins popularly known as area boys calling on government at all levels to proffer solutions.

“Like our custom, we are here to complement the efforts of LASTMA and other traffic agencies.

“In the past, we have been to Ketu, Ojota, 7Up/Tollgate, Maryland, Old Lagos/Abeokuta expressway, Anthony, Oshodi, Ikeja and other gridlock-prone areas in the State.

“Today is not different as we have contributed our quota.”

Former Vice Chairman of these volunteers, Mr Muritala Oyamakin, said that ongoing road construction at the Garage has contributed to the perennial gridlock often witnessed by road users.

He stressed that a good portion of the road had been unofficially allocated for commercial use and called on traffic agencies to spread their tentacles to the area.

According to him, “though the ongoing road construction has created a bus-stop for motorists and a walkway for pedestrians, marketers have occupied a full lane including the walkway which is negatively affecting traffic control in Ikorodu.

“For instance, the Red buses have nearly occupied everywhere there by denying smaller buses access to the bus-stop.”

Radio Nigeria Bond 92.9FM Traffic Ambassadors is an offshoot of an early morning programme, B’onaseri anchored by Adeoluwa Okunade popularly known as Mr Pilot.

The Ambassadors commenced activities about 15 years ago.
