Traditional festival turns bloody in Anambra
CITIZENS COMPASS — Scores of people were feared killed on Sunday and a traditional festival disrupted when some masked gunmen invaded Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The attack occurred during a festival called Onwa Asaa festival when the assailants driving in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) suddenly stormed a nearby eatery and opened fire on people, leaving many of them dead.
At press time, eye witnesses’ accounts put the death toll at 10.
The attack succeeded in disrupting the festival whose guests and organisers fled for their dear lives.
According to an eye witness who pleaded anonymity, “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos,” one witness recounted.
“The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but community members are calling for swift action from the authorities to restore peace and ensure security.
“We urge the government to take immediate action. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed,”
