Trader shot dead in Onitsha market
CITIZENS COMPASS—Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the death of a trader who died of gunshots allegedly fired by its Anti-touting Squad at the Science Equipment Market, Head Bridge, Onitsha.
Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that many others sustained injuries during the altercation.
The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, throwing residents into panic.
Ikenga further disclosed that upon receiving the distressing report, officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Head Bridge, promptly responded to the scene.
He said, “There, they encountered a distressing sight: a young man lying in a pool of blood, with another individual injured nearby.
“Both victims were swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Tragically, the attending doctor confirmed the death of one of the victims, underscoring the gravity of the situation. “Additionally, law enforcement recovered six expended cartridges from the scene, indicating the use of firearms during the altercation.”
The incident has left the local community reeling from shock and sorrow, as authorities work tirelessly to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the trader’s untimely death. The swift action taken by the Commissioner of Police underscores the commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
