TANKER EXPLODES AT SANGO/TOLL GATE: Two dead, three injured, 12 vehicles razed
CITIZENS COMPASS– TWO persons have reportedly died, three others were injured while 12 vehicles and makeshift structures were razed on Thursday, during a tanker explosion which occurred along Abeokuta Expressway, Toll Gate Bus Stop, Sango.
Eye witnesses’ account said the incident which impede free flow of vehicular movement in the area occurred at about 1am.
The incident was well attended to by a combined team of fire fighters from both Lagos and Ogun States.
Vehicles involved were three Red buses (LAGBUS), three motorcycles, three tricycles and an LT bus.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were among other responders who promptly responded to the incident.
In her detailed account of how the incident occured, Adeseye Margaret, the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said two male bodies were recovered from the incident which occurred when the petroleum- laden tanker was travelling to Abeokuta, Ogun State with 35,000 litres of Petroleum Motor Spirit.
She said rescue operation was concluded at about 11am.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently mopping up a Tanker Fire Accident at Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, Toll Gate Bus Stop, Sango.
“The vehicular accident which was architect by a trailer tanker travelling to Abeokuta, Ogun State laden with 35,000 litres of Petroleum Motor Spirit with unidentified registration number, which reportedly lost control and upturned while ascending the sloppy road and immediately burst in flame, affecting three LAGBUS (Red buses), a volkswagen commercial bus, some motorcycles known as okada and five tricycles within the 300 metres away from the scene.
‘The Fire spread also affected some make shifts and containerised shops by the road side.
“The alert which was received at 01:43 hours, Thursday saw Agege Fire Station as first responder before being backup by Alausa and Ikeja Fire Stations to put out the Fire that emanated from the accident at about 03:59 hours to move into the second phase of recovery.
“Consequently, two adult males of about 45 and 38 years old were recovered severely burnt while mopping up exercise continues, to evacuate the remains and clear the the ever busy road.
“The Federal Road Safety Corps and other emergency responders are collaborating to bring the operations into a logical conclusion.”
