CITIZENS COMPASS– Protesting students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, ran into the convoy of the State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, thereby attacking it.
They were protesting an increase in school fees.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, who disclosed this in a statement said the Deputy Governor was en route the 35 Artillery Brigade in Abeokuta, where she was scheduled to represent the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day reception.
However, her convoy encountered the protesters.
The tension quickly escalated as the students, already on edge, realized that the Deputy Governor was among those in the convoy.
The students were said to have swooped on the convoy in an attempt to disrupt the journey.
The convoy was forced to make an urgent detour, retreating to her lodge to allow the students to pass by.
The protest disrupted free flow of traffic for hours.
It was also reported that some of the security personnel sustained injuries while working to maintain orderliness during the volatile situation.
Comrade Adeyanju Francis, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has debunked an attack on the Deputy Governor.
He disclosed this while speaking with journalists saying that there was no confrontation with the Deputy Governor.
The student leader said the students had gathered in anticipation, mistakenly thinking she would address their grievances over the school fee hike.
He also pointed out that the protest, which was peaceful, was conducted under the supervision of six Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and a Deputy Commissioner of Police, ensuring order and security.
