Storey building partially collapses in Lagos
CITIZENS COMPASS –A storey building in Lagos partially collapsed on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
The building, located at 70, Adetola Street, Aguda, Surulere collapsed after the downpour of that day.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), which confirmed the incident to Citizens Compass said it received distress calls via its 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers said the partially collapsed building at 1051hours on Wednesday.
According to the Permanent Secretary of the Agency, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu in his preliminary report, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), received distress calls via its 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency numbers reporting a partially collapsed building at 1051hours this morning.
“Following the reports, LASEMA activated the Lagos State Emergency Response Plans with the swift arrival of the Agency’s Response Team from Onipanu at the incident scene by 1109 hours.
“Upon arrival at the incident scene, it was observed that the frontal part of the two-storey building had partially collapsed.
“Further investigation gathered at the incident scene revealed that the incident occurred in the early hours of today, due to the heavy downpour.
“Fortunately, nobody was trapped, nor injured in the incident, as the affected building signaled its distress before the incident occurred, which enabled all occupants to evacuate the building safely.”
In terms of team assessment and enumeration exercise, he said,
“The partially collapsed structure is a purpose-built mixture of residential and commercial buildings.
• The said building comprises 6 flats and 8 shops.
• The 6 flats comprise 3 units of 5-bedroom flats and 3 units of 3-bedroom flats.
On risk assessment and public advocacy, he said, “The LRT has conducted Risk Assessment on the affected building and its immediate environs, as well as Public Advocacy within the affected and surrounding buildings in the area for the safety of residents and surrounding properties.
“The affected building has been cordoned off for further necessary action by relevant government agencies.
“In Attendance*: LASEMA Response Team, LASAMBUS, LASBCA, LNSC, Lagos State Fire & Rescue Service, Lagos State Safety Commission, KAI,
NEMA, and NPF.
“Status: Operation still ongoing.”
