Protests kick off in Lagos 

... Civil Society Organisations protest hardship

 

CITIZENS COMPASS —Ahead of the planned nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), beginning from Tuesday, February 27, 2024, some civil liberty organisations on Monday, hit the streets to protest against hardship and rising costs of living in Nigeria. 

The protest was organised by the Joint Action Front (JAF) and Coalition for Revolution (CORE). 

While JAF and CORE hit the streets, another civil liberty organisation, the Take It Back Movement in collaboration with JAF, took the protest to the social media against hardship. 

The protest by JAF and CORE kicked off from NLC office at Yaba in the morning, moved to Ojuelegba to address people and from there to Ikorodu Road and terminated it at Maryland after another round of speeches. 

On its social media handles, the Take It Back Movement wrote, “We call on all hungry and angry citizens of Nigeria to join the 27th & 28th of February 2024 protest. 

“It is evident that the effect of subsidy removal, insecurity, increase in Custom duty and electricity tarrif has made cost of living high and unbearable 

“Lagos residents and commercial drivers face multiple taxation by the state sanctioned parks and garages tolling officers popularly known as agbero. Students nationwide are dropping out of school as a result of the increases in tuition and parents can no longer afford it. Alarming exchange rate caused by the IMF-induced Devaluation of the Naira and price of fuel has made the cheapest things become luxury. 

“The Nigerian nurses are also demanding reversal of NMCN verification rule so as to enable them to get verified easily for job opportunities. The government must adequately fund the healthcare sector rather than punish nurses looking for better offers.

“The latest victims of state demolition in Oworoshoki communities like the victims of ilubirin, otodo gbame, ikate, tarkwa bay and all other citizens rendered homeless by the state are yet to get justice and compensation.

“Market women can no longer run their petty businesses because of the anti people policies of the state 

“The brutal regime of the APC led by Bola Ahmed tinubu has refused to listen to the cry of the masses. Therefore, we the people must rise and demand:

  1. No To Hunger and Privatizations
  2. Return All Subsidies 
  3. No to NMCN verification rule
  4. Stop the Devaluation of the Naira.
  5. Pay workers living wage 
  6. End insecurity
  7. pay politicians minimum wage
  8. Stop demolishing working people homes to build luxury villas. 

“Join us on 27th and 28th 2024 as we march to the secretariat at alausa, Ikeja in Lagos with intention to extend it further to a resistance marathon longer than #Endsars till all our demands are met. “

As the protest progressed, Police were at hand to protect the protect it from being hijacked by hoodlums.
