Protests in government schools over increase in fees

CITIZENS COMPASS–Hundreds of parents on weekend, stormed various Model Colleges in Lagos State protesting the skyrocketed school fees imposed on the students by the state government.

The protesters were armed with placards bearing various inscriptions to register their plights 

The parents stormed the school entrances at day time shouting on top of their voices that the skyrocketed fees were beyond their reach.

Various photographs and videos on social media captured the protesters outside the school premises drawing government attention to the increase in the fees.

This was in response to the announcement by the state government about increases in the school fees from N35,000 to N100,000 per term.

In Ikorodu, venue of the protest was Oriwu Model College was the venue of the protests.

Some of the placards read, “No to increment,” “feeding fees for our children”, “No reversal, no resumption,”  “From N35,000 to N100,000,” “No Reversal,” No Entry,” “Say No to Boarding School Fee Hike,” “Where is the Free Education You Promised Our Children.” No to unnecessary burden among others.

Some of them chanted, “Enough is enough, please, do something, we cannot afford these new fees, and until they reverse it, our children will not go back to school,” one aggrieved parent stated during the protest.

The parents have barred their children from attending school in protest of a recent fee hike, insisting that no child will return to classrooms until the fee increase is reversed.

At press time, the schools were yet to release official statements to that effect.

Similarly, the parents unanimously circulated a terse message soliciting for the assistance of some human rights activists which read, “Good day comrade we the parents of model college in lagos state we are in need of anyone who can help us in respect of unnecessary increase of school fees in model schools in lagos state in the year 2021 it was increased from #25000 to #35000 now it has been increased to #100000 per term please we the parents need the help of the comrade to help us talk to the governor.
