
CITIZENS COMPASS– For over 10 hours on Monday, there was power outage in major parts of Spain as internet users were also shut out of their service providers.
The power outage was witnessed at about 12.30p.m followed by internet disruptions.
This affected business activities as supermarkets and malls hurriedly shut down to avoid the unforeseen.
Internet and calls were disabled during the period as residents made frantic efforts to connect one another.
Public transportation was not left out as the buses withdrew their services but not until many commuters especially students were returned to their various designations.
Various schools sent their students home after a few announcements.
It was learnt that the country declared a state of emergency after the massive power cut.
Citizens Compass gathered that Portugal also experiencd the power outage, causing widespread disruption.
The power was restored at about 11p.m while the internet was restored about an hour later.
According to Spain Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, over a half of Spain’s power had been restored.
As at the time of filing this report, Spain authorities were yet to establish why the outage occurred.
It was gathered that parts of southwestern France were also hit by the widespread power outage.
While the outage lasted, there was large traffic jams, delayed flights while residents were unable to access cash from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), as utility operators and the authorities scrambled to restore the electric grid.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, said there was “no indication” of a cyber attack. The Portuguese National Cyber security Centre also said there was no sign the disruption was due to a cyber attack.
