Popular singer, Onyeka Onwenu, laid to rest 

…Fans mourn

 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS–The popular singer, Onyeka Onwenu, has been laid to rest on Friday.

Onyeka Onwenu died on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

The burial of Onyeka Onwenu privately held in Lagos according to her wishes.

Onyeka Onwenu passed away on July 30, 2024, aged 72.

Oyeka Onwenu died on July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at a birthday event of the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Dr Stella Okoli.

Many Nigerians including her fans have been mourning her.

The funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, Lagos, followed by a private burial at a vault in the Ikoyi area of Lagos.

The burial of the music icon, Onyeka Onwenu played host to some important personalities including Peter Obi, former Presidential candidate during the 2023 elections.

Onyeka Onwenu remains were sighted in a white coffin, in a white chariot to the venues.

Onyeka Onwenu’s fans and admirers were seen writing tributes at the condolence table which was beautified with flowers and candles.

Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu died on July 39, 2024, at Reddington Hospital, Lagos.

Onyeka Onwenu was survived by two sons, Tijani Ogunlende and Abraham Ogunlende

She was nominated for the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Onyeka Onwenu was a singer/songwriter, politician, actress, journalist and social critic. Onyeka Onwenu was the Director General of the National Center for Women Development in Abuja, Nigeria. This Government Parastatal, which she managed for two and a half years, is responsible for Advocacy, Promotion, Research on issues concerning women in Nigeria, as well as training and skills acquisition programs in such areas as ICT, small business start-ups, catering, dress making, knitting,

Peter Obi in his X Handle wrote, “Today in Lagos, I joined family, friends and other mourners to pay my last respects to the late iconic song star, my very dear elder sister, Onyeka Onwenu, who was laid to rest. I still recall, with pain, her final moments before she took the final bow on 30th July, all of which I completely witnessed. Late Onyeka Onwenu remained a national treasure, who believed in a more united and progressive Nigeria. In her last performance on stage before the tragic incident that fateful day, she sang her popular song, “One Love Keep Us Together

and this bears significant testament to her belief while she lived here on earth. Once again, I like to extend my condolences to her children, family, friends, loved ones, and all of us, during this difficult time.

May we all find the strength and courage to bear her sad irreplaceable loss. May God grant her eternal rest and protect, and bless her family always. -PO

A social media influencer, Kalu Oke Kalu on his X Handle wrote, “May God console her family. We all should reflect how we live our lives. This life is to short to fill it with hatred and bitterness. Let Love lead, let us show Love and Care to One another.’

Meanwhile it’s a great concern that all evidence available online points to the direction that she was transported to the hospital in a private car as against a VIABLE ambulance that has the capacity to render a cadio pulmonary resuscitations….check video attached for what an ambulance looks like.”
