Panic as bus catches fire on Third Mainland Bridge
CITIZENS COMPASS–There was panic on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, on Thursday, when a Volkswagen LT bus was engulfed in fire.
The incident caused panic among users of the bridge following the alarm by sympathisers who put a call across to the emergency responders in the State to alert them that an incident had occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge.
It was learnt that the White Volkswagen LT bus with number plate, AKD356XY, suffered technical errors on way to Iyana-Oworo.
Fortunately, no life was lost as the occupants of the bus hurriedly escaped from the scene.
The incident resulted in traffic gridlock which was later attended to by the emergency responders.
Nosar Okunbor, spokesperson, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have the updates thus, “preliminary report regarding a burnt lt bus on Third Mainland Bridge, inward Iyana-Oworo. Following distress calls to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at 0828hrs, the Agency activated it’s Tiger Response Team from the Command and Control Centre, Alausa.
“A white Volkswagen LT bus, registration number AKD356XY was involved in a fire incident, which resulted in severe damage to the lone vehicle.
“Further investigations revealed electrical error as the cause of the fire.
“Fortunately, there was no loss of lives, nor injuries sustained as a result of the incident.
“The Agency’s Response Team activated necessary Safety measures while coordinating the recovery operation at the incident scene.
“Agency’s Response Team has activated the necessary sophisticated, heavy-duty equipment (Hiab) to recover the impediment off the bridge and prevent secondary incidents.
“The fire has been extinguished while the white bus, has been successfully recovered off the bridge to Agency’s Cappa Base.
Response and Recovery Efforts
-Quick response by primary responders.
-The fire was promptly extinguished, and the scene was secured.
-Deployment of Agency’s Heavy-Duty Recovery Equipment-Hiab for recovery of the carcass.
Operation Status
– The incident has been fully resolved.
– The road is now clear, and traffic flow has been restored.
-Recovery Operations concluded.
– The Agency’s LRT has returned to base.
“The swift response and effective interagency co-operation ensured a prompt and successful recovery operation, with minimal disruptions to traffic on the bridge.’
In attendance were, “Agency’s LRT, LASTMA, LASG Fire and Rescue Service.”
Similarly, three persons escaped
death by the whiskers in an autocrash involving a Toyota Highlander and a motorcycle, at the 2nd Rainbow bus stop, on the Oshodi-Apapa expressway, Lagos.
In a related development, LASEMA through its 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency lines at 2240hrs activated its Dolphin Response Team from Igando to recover an articulated truck which got stuck in a portion of the Lagos-Badagry expressway.
