One dies as building collapses in Abuja
CITIZENS COMPASS —A construction worker has reportedly died on weekend, as a building under construction collapsed in Abuja.
The deceased was initially rescued by emergency workers and sympathisers at the scene.
However, he reportedly died few hours after the rescue.
The Head of Public Affairs, National Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Nkechi Isa, confirmed the development on Sunday that read “yes, he died today”.
In an earlier statement, FEMA said the incident occurred at a construction site located in the Central Business District, beside Taj Bank, around 3:30 pm on Saturday.
The deceased was among labourers at the construction site casting the first floor of the building when the entire cast reportedly fell on him..
The victim was rescued and taken to the Trauma Centre of the National Hospital, Abuja.
“The team from FEMA and the FCT Fire service were able to rescue the trapped man with the aid of extrication equipment and the construction company’s excavator.”
Meanwhile, FEMA’s Acting Director General, Mohammed Sabo, who was at the scene of the incident and supervised rescue efforts, appealed to developers to always adhere to building codes.
