Ogun Speaker, Oluomo removed
CITIZENS COMPASS —Fresh crisis on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, rocked the Ogun State House of Assembly as its Speaker, Taiwo Oluomo, was removed.
This was said to have occurred in the morning through a simple majority decision within the assembly.
Among the allegations levied against Oluomo was corruption and embezzlement of funds.
Soneye Obafemi Kayode, a Member of the House of Assembly, representing Obafemi-Owode Local Government announced the removal while addressing journalists in the State.
It was learnt that 18 of 26 members of the Ogun State House of Assembly, removed the Speaker during a preliminary session.
The Assembly equally elected Mr Oludaisi Elemide, who represents Odeda State Constituency at the Assembly, as the new Speaker.
The plenary was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi.
Some months back, Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High court in Lagos on Tuesday granted permission to the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Taiwo Oluomo to travel abroad for a medical check.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on September 6, 2022, arraigned the embattled Speaker, before Justice Daniel Osiagor, during the annual vacation of the court, over allegations of stealing the sum of N2.4 billion.
The anti-graft docked Oluomos alongside the Director of Finance of the Assembly, Oladayo Samuel, and the Clerk of the House, Adeyemo Adedeji Taiwo before Justice Osiagor on an 11-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, and forgery.
EFCC prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo SAN had told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences between 2019 and 2022.
He said that the incident took place in Ogun State.
