Obayendo advises truck owners over death of driver on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS – FOLLOWING the death of a truck driver in an accident which occurred on the Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, on Thursday, June 22, 2023, Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, FinsTA, the President of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA),has called on truck owners to take  action over the incident. 

He disclosed this over the weekend in a statement signed by Chinwe Uwaegbute, MinsTA, National Publicity Secretary of the transport administration expressing deep concern over the tragic incident.

Citizenscompass on Thursday, reported that the truck driver lost his life on the  Expressway in the early hours having lost control and collided with another truck from the rear. The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident. 

Obayendo in the statement said the accident was avoidable.  

It partly reads, “The unfortunate incident occurred when the truck driver lost control and collided with another tanker from behind, leading to the immediate fatality of the driver,” 

He called on stakeholders to revisit the policy guiding truck activities on Nigeria roads,” President Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, FinsTA, emphasizes that such avoidable accidents during daylight hours should not become the norm. It is imperative that we revisit the policy allowing truck drivers to exclusively operate on our roads at midnight.

“President Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, FinsTA, calls upon the relevant agencies responsible for ensuring highway safety to take decisive action to prevent these incidents from becoming a recurring occurrence.,”

He urged truck owners to be vigilante, “Additionally, the Truck Owners Association of Nigeria is urged to prioritize the vigilance and physical fitness of their members before allowing them to operate on the roads. 

” Furthermore, the government is urged to explore deliberate investments in railway infrastructure nationwide for the transportation of highly inflammable goods.

” During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased truck driver. CIOTA remains committed to advocating for the safety and welfare of all transport stakeholders.”
