Obasa pursues suit against Lagos Assembly

CITIZENS COMPASS– The reinstated Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has pursued the lawsuit he filed against the Assembly.

Obasa is challenging the allegations leveled against him by 35 lawmakers which led to his removal on January 13, 2025.

The court adjourned the suit till March 10, 2025 for hearing of all applications, including Obasa’s originating summons.

Though the Speaker has been reinstated, his counsel Afolabi Fasanu, SAN, says though Mr. Obasa has been re-elected, the suit has not become an academic exercise.

According to Fasanu, the Speaker is now contending with the allegations in the notice of his removal which include fraud, high-handedness, abuse of office, gross misconduct, saying the Claimant’s was not given a fair hearing.

Romeo Ese Michael, the Counsel to the 34 lawmakers – who are the third to thirty-sixth defendants, said even if the complainant withdraws his suit due to his re-election, their counter claim still stands.

The lawmakers want the Court to declare that the Speaker’s removal was constitutional, and was in tandem with Section 92 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, rather than the Rules guiding the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro thereafter adjourned till Monday, 10, 2025.
