NNPC pipeline bursts in Lagos
CITIZENS COMPASS – FEW hours after dress queues resurfaced at gas stations across Nigeria, a pipeline belonging to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday, reportedly ruptured spilling petroleum product in Ije-Ododo area of Ikotun, Lagos State.
Some residents of the area were said to have seized the advantage scooping the content.
It was learnt that fear of possible fire outbreak hit the town of the scooping of fuel.
However, a quick intervention of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), brought the situation under control.
Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident in his Situation Report, said, ‘On arrival at the incident scene, the Agency’s response team found some visible quantities of leaked petroleum product (petrol) on the land surface.
“Investigation conducted by the Agency’s response team revealed the immediate cause of the leaked petroleum product was due to damaged pipelines.
” The following actions were taken:
– conducting critical risk assessment with regards to safety and precautionary measures.
– public advocacy and sensitization to the community with a view at eliminating any contact with the leaked petroleum product
– cordoning off the immediate and remote areas covering the incident scene
-the maintenance department of the NNPC had been duly informed about the incident. Hence, valves connecting to the incident scene had been shut off.
This has ultimately reduced the risk significantly, while the incident scene had been cordoned off.
– the Agency’s response team well as the Lagos Fire service, NSCDC Anti-Vandal Units, and the Nigeria Police (Isheri Osun Division) are on ground to avert any unsafe act(s) and unsafe actions
– assessment and re-assessment ongoing with a view at identifying any potential threats
– the entire community is safe with no palpable tension recorded”
