LG highlights achievements in education, organises inter-school competition in Ikorodu

CITIZENS COMPASS–Mr Wasiu Adesina, Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State, on Thursday, highlighted some of his achievements aimed at improving the educational sector in the area.
The Chairman has also parleyed a non-governmental organisation,Kaodwad and Associates, to organise an annual inter-school debate competition for public secondary schools in Ikorodu.
Adesina reelout the achievements during the flagging off of the annual inter- debate competition at the council secretariat in Ikorodu.
He said his administration has embarked on construction and rehabilitation of school facilities, distribution of essential materials to schools, provision of free GCE forms to 100 students among others in Ikorodu.
The council boss reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritse education by providing Ikorodu students with opportunities to advance their educational career.
“Debate competition is a significant step in promoting educational excellence and intellectual competition among students.
“It builds their confidence and encourage student in Ikorodu to compete academically with their peers from other regions,” he said
The Ikorodu council chairman said the competition would enable students engaged in intellectually-stimulating conversation on topical issues affecting the country, adding that winners would be awarded scholarships and prizes to support and develop their creativity.
Adesina said his administration has also plans to establish computer units in all 16 public schools to enhance digital literacy and learning experience and urged philanthropist to support the sector in developing youths who were interested in building career in education
“We urge well-meaning individuals and NGOs to contribute to educational initiatives, as the government can not do it all alone,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr Adeyinka Owodunni, the Executive Director of the NGO, advised youths to take their education seriously, adding that to be a leader in any part of the world, there is a need for a very sound education.
“Government alone can not do it, that is why we are doing everything possible to support the sector as an NGO,” he said.
Mr. Adedeji Owolabi, Head of Education Department in the council, commended the Chairman for his unwavering commitment to education that has led to tangible benefits for many young scholars.
Miss Zainab Adigun and Master Adedeji, students of Odogunyan Senior Grammar and Ipakodo Senior grammar schools appreciate the council boss for the competition because it enhances their academic excellence.
Citizen Compass reports that 16 public secondary schools would be participating in the competition scheduled to hold for three weeks while three schools: Ipakodo Grammar school, Odogunyan grammer and Luwasa high school were to slug it out to advance to the next level on the first day.
