LASTMA rescues truck driver as vehicle overturns in Lagos

CITIZENS COMPASS — Official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), on Wednesday, rescued a truck driver whose vehicle overturned in the State.

This occurred along Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, inward Gbagada, near Charley Boy area.

The accident obstructed the entire main carriageway leading to loss of manhours.

The officials were said to have promptly responded to the accident.

LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofik, said the accident was well maged by the Agency.

In a statement, he said, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly responded to a calamitous incident involving a fully loaded trailer that toppled on the Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, inward Gbagada, near Charley Boy, obstructing the entire main carriageway.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the ill-fated trailer, heavily laden with generators and industrial machinery, was traveling at an excessive speed when its brakes failed as it attempted to navigate the highway. The ensuing loss of control led to its collapse, resulting in severe traffic gridlock.

“To alleviate the situation, LASTMA personnel promptly diverted all vehicular traffic from Anthony to the service lane at TREM Church, ensuring a semblance of order amidst the disruption.

“In collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit, LASTMA orchestrated a meticulous rescue and evacuation operation. The operation successfully cleared the damaged trailer and its contents from the thoroughfare.

“The trailer’s driver, who sustained injuries, was immediately rescued by LASTMA officers and administered first aid. Security reinforcements from Pedro Police Station were on-site to ensure safety and maintain order throughout the rescue operation.

“LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended heartfelt sympathies to the injured driver and lauded the concerted efforts of all agencies involved in managing the incident. He seized the opportunity to reiterate the importance of adhering to road safety protocols, stating:

“We are immensely relieved that no lives were lost in this unfortunate incident. However, it underscores the critical need for motorists to observe traffic regulations. We urge all drivers to adhere to speed limits and conduct regular inspections of their vehicles, particularly their braking systems, to avert preventable road mishaps.”

“LASTMA remains steadfast in its commitment to facilitating seamless traffic flow and ensuring the safety of all road users within Lagos State.”
