LAGOS State Government on Monday, suspended members of the Ad-hoc Committee on Removal of Abandoned Vehicles (RAVC) across its 20 Local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), over alleged extortion of motorists in the state.
It said that the decision to suspend operations of RAVC was to appraise and review activities of the teams particularly as it concerns reducing travel time through the removal of abandoned vehicles impeding movements on major roads across the state.
The state government added that the decision to remove members of the committee was sequel to several complaints received from members of the public on activities of the identified units acting in variance with the vision behind the committee’s setup.
According to the government, the activities have continued to cause embarrassment for the state and that is why it had to act immediately.
Announcing the suspension on Monday, the Special Adviser on Transportation, Oluwatoyin Fayinka, explained that the Central Committee of RAVC would still continue operating.
Meanwhile, he warned that any ad-hoc team member found operating after the suspension would be handed over to law enforcement operatives for trial and prosecution in accordance with the Law of the State as captured in the Traffic Sector Reform Law (TSRL) 2018.
Fayinka also stated that the RAVC while in operation was able to remove many abandoned vehicles which hitherto posed as environmental nuisances, security, and traffic impediments.
The Special Adviser, through a statement released by the ministry, urged members of the public whose vehicles were impounded to come to RAVC Office, (Former VIO Office), Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja to process the release of their vehicles.
Assuring that the Central Committee would continue adhering to its statutory responsibility, Fayinka advised the Public to forward requests for the removal of all sorts of abandoned or stationery vehicles in their respective areas to his Office, Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Ministry of Transportation, the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.
