Human rights body tackle Lagos Assembly over Mohbad’s death, Bamise
CITIZENS COMPASS —Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), has taken up Lagos State House of Assembly over the brutal murder of the lady found missing after boarding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), in Lagos, Ayanwola Oluwabamise, and the death of Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad.
In a statement signed by the Lagos State Chairman of CDHR, Comrade Kehinde Adeoye; the State Secretary – Comrade Adewunmi Adesina and State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Chika Mary, dated October 6, 2023, CDHR commiserated with the Aloba family urged the investigating authorities to unearth the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of the pop singer.
The human rights body wondered why the Lagos State House of Assembly was quick to lend its voice to the call for the cause of Mohbad’s death to be unravelled while ignoring the call to unravel the circumstances surrounding the gruesome murder of 22 year-old Oluwabamise after boarding the bus.
BRT is being operated by Lagos Bus Services Ltd (LBSL).
The statement reads, “To have kept mute over the brutal murder of a Lagos commuter who patronised the BRT bus thinking it was safe but unfortunately met her untimely death inside the vehicle over 19 months ago but in less than two weeks, reacted publicly to Mohbad’s death, stating that the cause of death should be unravelled, leaves much to be desired.”
The statement described Lagos State House of Assembly’s reaction to Mohbad’s death as “mere hypocrisy”.
It added that the famous human rights outfit – CDHR members in their large numbers, stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly at Alausa-Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday 11 July, 2023 – the day that made it 500 days that BAMISE AYANWOLA was “murdered in cold blood” insisted on seeing the Speaker but after over four hours of insistence, the Majority Leader of the Assembly eventually met with the protesters, and promised to pass our message to the leadership of The House. “An official letter regarding same, was delivered and received in the office of The Hon. Speaker on July 26, 2023 and copied : The Chief Judge of Lagos State; the Attorney-General & Commission for Justice; the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State; Office of The Clerk of The House of Assembly; Majority Leader of The House; O/C, Civic Engagement – Governor’s Office; Women Advocacy, Research & Documentation Centre (WARD C) urging the authorities to prevail on the Lagos State Judiciary to give the murder case the “accelerated hearing” it promised BUT up till this moment, nothing has been heard from the Lagos State House of Assembly on Bamise’s case which has suffered series of unnecessary adjournments. Only the office of The Chief Judge of Lagos State acknowledged the letter. ” JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED “.
The statement also challenged the authorities to confirm if truly the murder suspect – Andrew Nice Ominikoron is still in prison custody.
It would be recalled that Bamise was raped and murdered (according to autopsy report) inside BRT bus on Saturday February 26, 2022 at about 7.30pm between Chevron Bus-stop, Ajah and Lagos Island while on board BRT No. 240257. Thursday 19 October, 2023 will make it 600 (six hundred) days since she was murdered yet justice is still being awaited.
