CITIZENS COMPASS — Justice Rahman Oshodi of Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Lagos State, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, adjourned till October 27, 2023 the matter of a commercial driver, Jelili Lawal, who allegedly raped a 78 years old womam to death.
The victim has since died of excessive bleeding.
An Investigative Police Officer (IPO), ASP Babatunde Ashifat, told the Court how it all went in January 2019.
Ashifat was led in evidence by Lagos State counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, at the resumed trial of Lawal for rape.
The witness said that he was assigned the case for investigation on Jan. 2, 2019.
He testified that two ladies, who saw the defendant raping the septuagenarian, called the attention of a policeman on night patrol.
The witness further told the court that the victim, who had problems with her ears, had been declared missing by her family.
The IPO said the woman sustained injuries from the rape and later died from excessive bleeding.
The victim was bleeding from her anus and vagina, and I gave a medical form for her to be taken to the Mirabel Medical Centre.
“The medical doctor, who examined her, confirmed that there was a forceful penetration into her vagina.
“I was later told that the victim died due to the bleeding,” the witness said.
The IPO also said that, after the report was made, he recorded statements of the victim and the defendant.
He further said that he visited the scene of the crime, which was bushy and abandoned.
Justice Rahman Oshodi adjourned the case until Oct. 27 for the continuation of trial. So far
In January, 2019, the 41-year-old commercial bus driver, was arrested for allegedly raping the 78 years old woman who was in Oloti community, in Adeniji Jones, Ikeja area of Lagos.
The septuagenarian, with an undisclosed identity, was on her way home, but missed the way.
Jelili who was acting as a Good Samaritan later seized the opportunity to rape her.
While asking questions from commuters on how to get to her base at Ketu, from Maryland,Ikeja, Jelili, was said to have offered to take her there, in his bus.
However, midway into the journey, Jelili reportedly detoured to Oloti village , off Adeniji Jones, where he allegedly raped her.
While at it, the victim raised an alarm that attracted someone in the neighbourhood, who alerted the Police.
