CITIZENS COMPASS– A report in Year 2019 revealed that the elderly population in Nigeria is growing rapidly, with an estimated 4.6 million people particularly from ages 65 and above.
It is not an understatement to say that this demographic shift may have significant implications on the healthcare system, social services, and the overall wellbeing of the elderly people with Nigeria as a case study.
The elderly people in Nigeria face unique psychosocial health challenges that affect their quality of life and overall health outcomes.
Major health challenges
One of the major health challenges peculiar with the elderly are chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and stroke.
Mental health issues
Depression, anxiety, and dementia are common mental health issues among the elderly.
Sensory impairments
Age-related sensory impairments such as hearing and vision loss are prevalent among the elderly.
Malnutrition is another health challenge among the elderly, particularly those living in rural areas.
Inadequate healthcare
Some elderly people often have limited access to healthcare services, particularly in rural areas.
Social isolation
Social isolation is a common challenge among the elderly particularly those who live alone.

Elder abuse and neglect are significant concerns in Nigeria, particularly in the context of caregiving.
