CITIZENS COMPASS– Social vices refer to the behaviour or activities that are considered harmful, immoral or unacceptable by the society.
Most of the time, the behaviour can have negative consequences for individuals, students, community and society at large.
The most common social vices among Nigeria students include: prostitution, indecent dressing, robbery, cultism, pocket picking, hooliganism, thuggery, gambling, smoking, premarital sexual activities, rape, examination malpractice, disobedience, bullying, theft, and frauncy, substances abuse.
Prevalence of social vices among secondary school students in Nigeria
Research suggests a high prevalence of social vices among Nigerian students.
Ezeaku and Dunu (2024), Olubunmi (2022), Offor and Arivi (2024) reported high prevalence of social vices among secondary school students in Nigeria.
Another study reported 23 percent of secondary school students in Nigeria had engaged in sexual activities.
Bullying is also a significant problem with 40.6 among secondary school students in Nigeria.
Major Causes of social vices among secondary school students
Peer pressure.
Broken home.
Poverty.
Negligence by parents.
Unemployment and poor academic performance.
Antisocial personality disorder.
Poor reading habit.
Low self esteem.
Poor supervision and attention by both at home and in school.
