CITIZENS COMPASS —Some suspected gunmen in Enugu State have reportedly kidnapped a corpse and some mourners demanding ₦50m.
It was learned that the mourners were conveying the corpse to his village in Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in the Nsukka Local Government Area of the State on Sunday, February 18, 2024, when the gunmen struck.
The kidnappers have reportedly reached out to the family of the deceased and demanded a ransom of N50 million.
Although the police in Enugu have stated that there was no such information before the command, reports claimed that the remains of one
Mr. Ugwuanyi Israel, who died in Lagos was taken away alongside some family members at Umuoka in the Udi local government of Enugu when they were conveying the body to his community.
A family member quoted by Ikenga Online, said, “His corpse was on its way from Lagos yesterday (Sunday) when the vehicle conveying his body was halted by kidnappers, and people in the vehicle alongside the driver were all kidnapped at Umuoka Udi LGA of Enugu State.
“The kidnappers have called the family and demanded a N50 million ransom.”
A former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof Chidi Odinkalu, who also shared the report on his X, wrote:
“Israel Ugwuanyi died in Lagos. Yesterday, family members were conveying his remains to Ameze Owerre, Umabor community in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State in SE #Nigeria when kidnappers abducted them & his dead body. They are demanding N50m in ransom.”
However, when our Correspondent contacted the Enugu State Police Command for further information, the Command’s spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said he was not aware of the incident.
He said: “Honestly I don’t have any such report.”
