Gunmen abduct Chevron worker, kills driver
CITIZENS COMPASS – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Samuel Ekerenam, a Chevron Nigeria Limited worker and businessman, and the killing of his personal driver in Eket Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the Command, ASP Timfon John, disclosed to journalists on Tuesday, that the incident occurred on Saturday, November 23, 2924, at about 10:55 p.m. at Ekerenam’s Hephzibah Shopping Mall on Afaha Uqua Obok-Idim Road.
John explained that the gunmen, who arrived heavily armed, fired shots to scare off bystanders, fatally shot the victim’s driver, incapacitated his police escort, and abducted Ekerenam.
“The Commissioner for Police, CP Joseph Eribo, along with his tactical team, has visited the crime scene, and efforts are in full swing to ensure the victim is rescued unharmed,” John assured.
A family source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the abductors have not yet contacted the family, leaving them uncertain about their motive. “We are yet to determine whether the abduction was for ransom or some other reason,” the source said.
The source also disclosed that Ekerenam, a pastor and Chevron employee, had just returned from work on the day he was taken.
Reports indicate that the police orderly assigned to Ekerenam sustained severe injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
This incident recalls the 2019 abduction of Ekerenam’s wife, Mrs. Glory Ekerenam, in Eket and held at a den in Ikot Ubo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, before her release.
