Flood sacks Lagos communities
CITIZENS COMPASS —Residents of Lagos State Development Authority Housing Scheme at Isheri North GRA, Opic, off Channels Television in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State as well as their neighbours at the Ogun State end of the Isheri community are counting their losses as the areas are submerged by flood on Thursday.
It was gathered that the flood was caused by the water released from the Oyan Dam last weekend.
FTN learnt that these areas might still experience more floods as the dam continues to release more waters in the days ahead.
A resident of the Isheri North GRA said, “The information from Oyan Dam is that as of this afternoon two gates are open at 16% each. The water release approximates to 24 million cubic metres per day.
“This suggests that for us at Isheri North the floods waters would continue to rise over the next week. Please note that water release is not yet at the maximum reached in 2019. For comparison, the maximum release in 2022 was 18.3 million cubic metres per day,” he said.
There have been calls for help by elderly residents of the area trapped in their homes. Already, residents are turning to canoe riders for movement.
Meanwhile, residents of Owode Onirin, Ajegunle and Irawo, in the Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State have resolved to ferry themselves in canoe as their community had been submerged by flood.
The flooding was said to be caused by the water released from the Oyan Dam last weekend.
At press time, residents of the community including women and children have sought the services of canoe operators to move to and fro their homes.
Some of them told our correspondent that they would remain in the flood as their source of livelihoods are within the area.
On Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the Lagos State Government urged residents living in flood prone areas to seek alternative accommodation.
Areas mentioned are as Alagbole, Meiran, Maidan, Kara, Isheri-Olowora, Agiliti, Owode-Onirin, Owode-Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, Ajegunle, Itowolo, Majidun, Ibeshe, Baiyeku, Maidan, Lekki-Ajah and the Lagos Lagoon boundaries.
