CITIZENS COMPASS —Protests on Monday, November 13, 2023, grounded the Charley Boy area of Gbagada – Oshodi Expressway inward Gbagada Lagos State, as a fleeing motorist crushed two street sweepers to death while escaping arrest from law enforcement agents.

The road side sweepers were workers from the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) who were carrying out their official duties.

The incident occurred in the morning.

It was gathered that they were hit by the driver of a car with number plate, EPE 984 DV, who skidded off the expressway into the drainages.

It could not be ascertained if the driver sustained injuries but eye witnesses’ accounts said he had been apprehended and handed over to the Police.

Residents were joined by road users to protest the death which affected free flow of vehicular movement in the axis.

An eye witness, Rauf Odofin in a telephone conversation with Citizens Compass said the protesters were later dispersed by law enforcement operatives as street urchins have hijacked the protests.

“The LAWMA workers were discharging their duties when a motorist was driving recklessly and suddenly, he crushed both of them into the drainages.

” As I speak, protests have erupted which has led to traffic jam and many of us are stranded.”

The incident was confirmed by LAWMA on its X account popularly known as Twitter.

The statement reads, “The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) regrets to announce the tragic death of two of our esteemed sanitation workers, who were hit by a reckless driver, in the cause of discharging their lawful duties and rendering invaluable services to humanity around Gbagada axis.

“LAWMA is working with security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the errant driver of the car, with vehicle number EPE 984 DV.

“We wish to appeal to motorists for the umpteenth time, to drive with utmost caution on the highways, to avoid sad incidents like this happening to our sanitation workers or anyone in the course of their legitimate duties.

“The public is urged to remain calm as appropriate steps are being taken and necessary measures put in place.
