Firefighter falls from storey building in Lagos
CITIZENS COMPASS – A firefighter in Lagos State on Friday, June 14, 2024, fell from the ceiling of a storey building during an emergency to the scene of a fire outbreak.
The incident occurred at about 8a.m at 16, Alhaji Jubril Street, Magodo Phase II.
The prompt response of other emergency workers were said to have saved the day as they quickly rescued the firefighter.
Confirming the incident, the Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in his updates said, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has responded to distress calls via the state’s Toll Free Emergency numbers 767/112 on a fire outbreak in a one-storey building at the above-mentioned address.
“The Agency’s Response Team from the Command and Control Centre at Alausa arrived at the twin-duplex where the incident occurred at 0802hours today.
“Upon arrival of the Agency’s Response Team at the incident scene, it was discovered that the fire started at approximately 7:05 AM and quickly spread from the main duplex consisting of about five rooms.
“The fire then escalated through the roof to the other wing of the duplex, which consisted of about three bedrooms and a living room.
“After thorough investigations, the Agency’s LRT discovered that the cause of the fire was as a result of an electrical surge from the air conditioner unit in one of the rooms in the main duplex.
“The occupants of the duplex were evacuated safely, and no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
“The fire was extinguished by the joint efforts of the Agency’s LRT and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which responded promptly to the emergency call.
“The duplex suffered significant damage, leaving the roofing and interiors seriously affected.
The inferno was quickly curtailed from spreading to surrounding and adjacent buildings.
“The contents of the duplex, including furniture and personal belongings, were salvaged by the quick response of the response unit.
“The Fire Service Department extinguished the fire and ensured safety of the occupants.
“The inferno has been successfully put out. However, while dampening down was on going, one of the fire fighters fell from the ceiling, but was quickly rescued and attended to by the LASAMBUS officials at the incident scene.
“Dampening down over, ” the operation concluded.
