Family escapes death as building collapses in Lagos

 

CITIZENS COMPASS –A Lagos family has escaped death when the boys’ quarters of a storey building collapsed at 49 Oyinlola Street, off Adealu Bus Stop, Iyana-Ipaja area of the State. 

The incident occurred at about 10.44p.m on Saturday.

Fortunately for the family members, they were able to escape unhurt before the building caved in just as sympathisers put a call across emergency responders in the State for help.

The incident did not record any casualty or fatality.

Citizens Compass gathered that the building suffered self collapse as a result of neglect and poor maintenance. 

Other occupants of the building have been advised to relocate.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in his updates said, “The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, (LASEMA), responded to distress calls received via the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free lines at 2244hrs on Saturday 13th July, 2024 from its Igando and Cappa Base.

“Upon arrival at the scene, investigations revealed that it was the boys’ quarters domiciled behind a storey-building at the above-mentioned location that self- collapsed. 

Fortunately, the single family involved was able to escape before the collapse. There were no casualties nor fatalities involved in the incident.

“Further investigations revealed that the boys’ quarter of the said storey-building self-collapsed as a result of neglect and poor maintenance. 

“Agency’s Response Teams conducted Public Enlightenment for Awareness and Knowledge on the inherent and real dangers to occupants of the building on their continuous stay there.

“The main building which consists of nine rooms downstairs and two flats upstairs, has been cordoned off. 

“All occupants have been advised to vacate the building immediately for the safety of their lives and properties.

“Location of the self-collapsed boys’ quarters is inaccessible. Therefore, manual demolition of its remnants is recommended.

“Manual clearing of the debris from the self-collapsed boys’ quarters is equally recommended for the above reason of space.

“Integrity Tests by Material Testing Laboratory have also been recommended for the main building, to determine its continued existence.
