CITIZENS COMPASS– The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) yesterday, announced that local council elections across the state will take place on July 12.

The Commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Tope Ojo, made the announcement in a statement.

According to him, the election will cover all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), involving 57 chairmanship positions and 376 councillor seats. If there’s a need for a re-run in any area, it has been scheduled to happen on July 19.

To begin preparations, LASIEC has issued the Notice of Election, officially stating the election process. Political parties are expected to visit the commission’s headquarters to collect nomination forms for their candidates.

A key meeting with all registered political parties has been planned for Tuesday to discuss the upcoming election process. Ojo also mentioned, “The Election Guidelines will be published on April 17,” which will help clarify the rules and next steps.

Campaigns and rallies are allowed to begin on April 18 and will continue until July 9. Candidates will use this period to connect with voters. Additionally, forms for “substituted” and “only candidate” nominations must be submitted between June 18 and June 25.

Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), the LASIEC Chairman, promised that the commission is fully committed to running a transparent and fair election. He said all political parties will be given equal treatment.

He also advised all parties and their candidates to follow the official timetable. According to him, the success and fairness of the election rely heavily on everyone respecting the rules.
