Defence minister declares  nationwide state of emergency

CITIZENS COMPASS–Israeli Defence Minister,Yoav Gallant, has declared a 48-hour nationwide state of emergency, effective 6:00 am (0300 GMT) on Sunday, following pre-emptive strikes launched by the Israeli military in Lebanon.

The Minister who disclosed this in a press statement, explained that the state of emergency empowers the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to issue directives to Israeli citizens, which may include restrictions on gatherings and the closure of certain sites deemed at risk.

“I am convinced that there is a high probability of an attack against the civilian population in areas of the country where the declaration of a special situation did not apply,” Gallant stated, indicating that the emergency measures were being extended to additional areas beyond those previously affected by local alerts.

The declaration, valid for 48 hours, underscores Israel’s heightened state of readiness amid escalating tensions in the region.

In a separate statement, the Israeli defence ministry revealed that Gallant had briefed US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin on the evolving situation. “We have conducted precise strikes in Lebanon to thwart an imminent threat against the citizens of Israel,” Gallant informed Austin, emphasizing Israel’s commitment to safeguarding its population.

Gallant also highlighted Israel’s close monitoring of developments in Beirut and reiterated the country’s resolve to use all available means to defend its citizens. The discussion between the two defence leaders also touched on the critical need to avoid regional escalation.

As Israel braces for potential retaliatory actions, the government remains focused on maintaining security and stability during this period of heightened alert.
