Church, vehicles on fire as tanker explodes along Otedola Bridge in Lagos 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS– A new generation church alongside other buildings and four vehicles were engulfed in fire on Monday when a tanker exploded on Otedola Bridge in Lagos.

The 30 tonnes DAF Gas Truck with unknown number plate was said to be navigating Lagos-Ibadan expressway when the explosion occurred in the evening.

Travellers and other road users on the expressway were stranded for hours as a result of the explosion

One of the travellers, Mr Ireti Adewale said he was to travel to Ilorin in Kwara State through the expressway when he got wind of the explosion and quickly diverted the journey to Ikorodu-Sagamu Road to avoid being stranded.

While Adewale was lucky, Mr Ibrahim Quadri said he was stranded for hours owing to the explosion.

Margaret Adeseye, Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, while confirming the explosion said, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a Fire resulting from a tanker accident outward Otedola bridge, Omole, Lagos at about 20:00 hours.

“The 30 tonnes DAF Gas Truck with an unknown registration number is on it way navigating the Lagos-Ibadan expressway before an accident resulting in an ensuing explosion accompany with Fire balls in front of a Reedem Church.The resultant Fire quickly spread to the church and adjoining bungalow building as well as four different brands of vehicles as it being mitigated from causing further damage.

“While Firefighting operations is ongoing, there has been no record of casualty with further update to follow.”

Lagos State Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said four people were injured and one dead during the explosion

He said 14 vehicles were destroyed while a commercial storey building was affected and four shops were damaged
