Boy who stood infront of Peter Obi’s convoy regains freedom
…Cleared of conspiracy, robbery charges
CITIZENS COMPASS– The Apapa Magistrate Court in Lagos State, on Thursday, released a teenager, Alabi Quadri, who went viral for stopping Peter Obi’s convoy during the 2023 elections.
The Court cleared him of all conspiracy and robbery charges filed against him.
Quadri, who went viral during the 2023 general elections for confronting the campaign convoy of the then-Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was found to have no case to answer.
According to his lawyer, human rights advocate Inibehe Effiong, Alabi was abducted in January 2025 by two individuals known as “Lege” and “Baba Waris” — members of a group of local enforcers or “Area Boys” in Amukoko, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos.
The court discharged him of conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery.
The court session took place at Court 9, Sikiru Adagun Courthouse in Orege, Ajegunle, where the judge ruled in favour of Quadri.
He had spent several months in detention at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos before his appearance in court. Though the hearing was initially set for April 28, 2025, it was moved up to April 17 after a joint request from human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which the court accepted.
Quadri gained attention in 2023 when he stood in front of Peter Obi’s campaign convoy, an act that earned him admiration from many. However, his newfound fame reportedly stirred resentment in his local community.
According to his lawyer, his arrest and detention were not due to any criminal activity but were the result of jealousy and vendettas from local “area boys” who felt entitled to the benefits of his newfound popularity.
