Police indicted in death of sales girl in Ojota

CITIZENS COMPASS– A coroner’s inquest in Lagos, has indicted Lagos Police over the alleged killing of Jumoke Oyeleke, a sales girl, during a rally by members of the Yoruba Nation agitators in Ojota, Lagos State on July 3, 2021.

Jumoke was said to be killed by a stray bullet when members of the Yoruba Nation agitators converged on the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, on July 3, 2021, to demand an independent state for the Yoruba-dominated South-West. Jumoke, a 25-year-old salesgirl, was allegedly shot dead by a stray bullet in the course of the protest.

The coroner, Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi, of the magistrate court, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos State, stated on Monday, said that the police shot the deceased and caused her untimely death.

The only logical conclusion is that the deceased died from a weapon by the Nigerian police,” the coroner stated, adding that Jumoke deserved sympathy.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has since visited Jumoke’s mother and relocated the family from their one room apartment to a modern flat in Owode-Onirin area of Lagos.

However, this has sparked criticism from Nigerians who are worried about how the family will come with payment after the expiration of the rent

Recall that Jumoke was said to have died of stray bullets during the protest but the protesters have exonerated the protesters saying the bullets were fired by the Nigeria Police.

However, the Police denied this in a statement, issued by the then Spokesperson, Lagos State Command, Muyiwa Adejobi who has since been elevated as the National spokesperson.
