Bad Road: Protesters shut down Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

HUNDREDS of protesters on Wednesday, shut down the Ota axis of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ota, over the deplorable state of the road.

Bearing various placards with various inscriptions, the protesters shut down the road in the morning and prevented access to and fro.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), led by the Ogun State Chapter in collaboration with the Lagos State Chapter of the union also joined in the protests.

Some of the placards read, “We don’t want palliatives”. “We want good roads”, “Dapo Abiodun safe our souls from bad roads”. “We are not slaves in our country”.

Some of the protesters said the deplorable condition of the road has forced many people to relocate to neighbouring communities.

Also, they said the poor condition of the road causes traffic robbery due to perennial traffic gridlock in the area

Addressing journalists at the scene of the protests, Mr Emmanuel Bankole, Chairman, NLC, Ogun state, said, we will not allow anybody to take away our right, stating that the NLC was not happy with the state of roads along Lagos-Abeokuta and its environs.

“In a time like this, we do not have any options other than to express our displeasure to the government.”

He stressed, that the 21 days ultimatum given by NLC has lapsed after when Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, visited Sango-Ota.

Bankole said that Fashola promised to commerce palliative work, adding that nothing much has been done since then.

We deserve better than what we have seen today, it is below our expectations”. He said.

Mrs Funmi Sessi, Lagos NLC Chairman, said that we believe in action, the time for talking is gone, adding that there is an urgent need to ameliorate the sufferings of the masses.

Sessi said that this action is long overdue as people were afflicted with serious pains as a result of the deplorable state of the roads in Sango-Ota along Lagos Abeokuta Expressway.

She said that the Lagos chapter has come to partner with their colleagues in Ogun toward the struggle to ensure that good road are delivered to the people of the state.
