Policeman dies as colleagues, Okada riders clash in Lagos
A clash between some suspected motorcycle operators popularlly called ‘Okada’ riders and Policemen,, on Thursday, in Ajao Estate area of Lagos has claimed the life of a Policeman identified as CSP. Kazeem Abonde.
Many persons including road users were said to be injured during the incident.
Trouble started when a team of Policemen raided the area, clampdown on the riders and impounded some motorbikes.
The okada riders with the support of the area boys, protesting the impounding of their bikes, unleashed mayhem in the area, destroying properties worth millions of Naira.
The clampdown was part of continued measure to put an end to the penchant disregard for traffic rules and regulations by okada riders in the state.
A background voice of a viral video advised people to keep off the scene to avoid being caught up.
The deceased was said to have led the operation to the area but was left behind by his team members who scampered for safety.
He was said to have been hacked to death on the spot while two operrational vehicles were vandalised.
An eye witness, Mr. Isola Razak said one of the vehicles was vandalised near a new generation bank while another was vandalised at Eleganza Plaza.
It was learnt that commercial and vehicular activities were grounded for hours as a result of the incident.
At press time, the Spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu said he was yet to get the details of the incident.
When our correspondent visited the area, most shops on the ever busy Lateef Salami Street, Awoniyi Elemo, Asa-Afriogun and the popular Osolo Way were closed, while scores of commuters were seen stranded, as tricycle popularly called Keke Marwa were off the road, as operators scamper for safety.
No arrest has been made at press time.
