Obasa: Court states position on impeachment

CITIZENS COMPASS– The Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Wednesday, declared that the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was illegal and unconstitutional.

The court stated that the process leading to the impeachment invalid.

The judgment, also ruled that all actions and decisions made by the Assembly during the sitting that led to his removal on January 13, 2025, are null and void.

Obasa had filed a lawsuit against the House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was named the new Speaker after his removal. The suit was filed on February 12, 2025, through his lawyer, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN). He claimed that the decision to remove him was made while the House was on recess and while he was out of the country.

According to Obasa, the session where he was removed was not legally called and had no approval or formal authorization from the Speaker’s office. He challenged the action on nine different legal points, based on the 1999 Constitution and the internal rules of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
