Electoral Commissioner resigns in Rivers

CITIZENS COMPASS–Following the recent Supreme Court ruling that annulled the October 5, 2024, Local Government Council elections in Rivers State, the commissioner for Transport, Logistics, and Stores at the State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Ibierembo Evelyn Thompson, has resigned.

Her resignation letter was dated March 9, 2025.

The letter cited the judgment as the primary reason for her departure.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and wished the Commission well in its future endeavors.

Her resignation comes amid escalating political tensions in the state.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a warrant for the arrest of the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), following his failure to honor multiple summons by the lawmakers.

During a plenary session on Monday, the Assembly resolved to take legal action after the RSIEC chairman ignored a 72-hour ultimatum to appear before the House. Lawmakers had initially given him 48 hours to respond but extended the deadline to allow him to provide explanations regarding the controversial October 2024 local government elections, which were later nullified.
