One dead, 25 injured as driver rams into soldiers in Lagos 

 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS-–An adult female was reported dead while 25 others were injured on Friday, when a driver suspected to be under the influence of alcohol rammed into some soldiers in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

The accident occurred when the soldiers attached to Myoung Military Barracks, Morocco, Yaba, Lagos.

It occurred outside the barracks during a monthly exercise in the early hours.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the accident in a statement by its spokesperson, Oluwadamilola Jayeola.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash (RTC) that occurred at about 09:30hours today, near Myoung Military Barracks, Morocco, Yaba, Lagos.

“The incident involved a lone vehicle, black Honda Accord (registration number APP 831 HH), which veered off the road and struck a group of military personnel after their routine morning training exercise.

“A total of 27 persons were involved in the crash, including 12 adult males and 15 adult females. Unfortunately, one adult female lost her life, while 25 others sustained varying degrees of serious injuries. The injured victims were taken to the Military Hospital, Yaba, for prompt medical attention.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash was caused by speeding.

“Witnesses at the scene of the crash alleged that the driver and occupants of the vehicle may have been under the influence of alcohol or other substances and that one of the occupants reportedly fled the scene, while the remaining two were apprehended by the military personnel.

“The FRSC team promptly arrived at the scene within 24 minutes of receiving the report, working with relevant security agencies to ascertain the cause, severity, and number of casualties involved.

“The Sector Commander, FRSC Lagos, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat has reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safer roads and has urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.”
