Rev Father involves in secret marriage

CITIZENS COMPASS – The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has announced the suspension of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, who secretly married in the United States.

The Church made this public via a statement signed by the Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and the Chancellor/Notary of the diocese, Very Rev. Fr. Clement A.

The statement said Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. Footage of the ceremony has since circulated widely on social media, sparking reactions within the Catholic community. His action, the diocese noted, contravenes Canon 1394 §1 of the Church’s laws, which prohibits priests from contracting marriage.

The diocese further clarified that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had been without an official assignment in the United States and had previously contacted the bishop on November 30, 2024, requesting release from his priestly obligations. However, the suspension took effect immediately after his marriage was confirmed.

“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in accordance with Canon 1394 §1. He is now officially prohibited from exercising any sacred ministry or presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity. The canonical implications of this suspension are immediate, pursuant to Canon 1333.”

The statement also expressed hope for Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s reflection and reconciliation:

“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation. He retains the right to petition for a review of this decree, demonstrating a willingness to reform.”
