CITIZENS COMPASS –A yet-to-be-identified truck driver on Wednesday, lost his life to an accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident occurred in the morning at Kara Bridge outwards Lagos when the unidentified truck laden with several rolls of coils of steel was involved in an accident with a 40ft container without the truck head and both were found to have completely obstructed vehicular movement at the location.
The impact of the accident led to many road users being trapped in a traffic jam that lasted for hours.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the accident to Citizens Compass.
He said, “Following distress calls received via the CRM on the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free Lines at 0426hrs, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans and it’s Response Team from Command and Control Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
“Upon arrival at the incident scene, LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team discovered that a Truck, registration unknown laden with several rolls of coils of steel and a 40ft container without the Truck head were found to have been involved in a road accident thereby completely obstructing vehicular movement at the aforementioned location.
“Investigation conducted by the Agency’s Response Team revealed that the articulated truck driver who was on motion, in a bid to avoid collision with a 40-foot container on the road lost control and fell on its side resulting in the discharge of it’s cargoe (coils of steel) on the carriageway.
“An unidentified adult male driver lost his life to the incident and the body had been taken away before arrival of the Agency’s Response Team.
– LASEMA’s Response Team has activated necessary Safety Measures at the incident scene
– Traffic Control Measures has been activated with Road Diversion in place.
– LASEMA’s Response Team is coordinating the Recovery Operation.
– Collaborative efforts are ongoing to quickly evacuate the impediments off the road to restore vehicular activities.
– After much collaborative effort, emergency responders have been able to recover the impediments off road.
– Road has been set free for vehicular movement.
– Recovery operations concluded.”
Responders at the scene were – LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force and a host of others.
In a related development, five persons were injured in an accident along the Expressway
specifically outward Berger inward Otedola Bridge section.
The victims were attended to by emergency responders.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary also gave the details in his updates.
According to him, five occupants of a mini yellow commercial bus popularly known as Korope were involved in the accident.
They were four males and a female when the bus with a license number, KEY 301 XB was involved in the accident.
He said, “A road traffic accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically on the outward Berger inward Otedola Bridge section.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a mini yellow commercial bus (Korope) registration number KEY 301 XB was involved in an accident.
“Further investigations revealed that the bus was involved in a head-on collision with a police patrol van that was driving against traffic (one-way).
– Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded in the incident.
– Five occupants of the bus, including the driver and conductor, sustained various degrees of injuries. The breakdown of the injured victims is as follows:
– 4 males
– 1 female
– The injured victims received immediate medical attention from the Agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit and LASAMBUS.
– Two of the victims were subsequently transported to the hospital for further medical attention.
– The affected bus was recovered from the road and moved to a lay-by with the aid of the Agency’s Lite Tow truck.
– The accident mini bus has been recovered.
– Vehicular activities has been restored.
– Recovery operation has been concluded.
