Fire razes Lagos market

 

CITIZENS COMPASS – A late-night fire outbreak has razed the popular Ajah Market at Alesh Bus Stop in the Lekki -Etiosa area of Lagos State.

Fortunately, no life was lost or injuries sustained but many lock-up shops, goods and other property were razed when the inferno was recorded at about 9.30a.m on Sunday.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident in the early hours of Monday, said the Agency activated its Search and Rescue operation to the scene in collaboration with Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other responders.

“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, in response to distress calls via the 767 / 112 Toll-Free Lines at 0930hrs, activated its Emergency Response Team from Lekki Base.

“On arrival of the Shark Response Team at the incident scene by 2210hrs, it was discovered that several shops and stores housing combustible materials were engulfed by fire at the aforementioned location.

“Investigations conducted by LRT revealed that the immediate cause of the fire could not yet be ascertained as at the time of writing this report.

– Fortunately, no casualties were recorded at the incident scene.

– No injuries were sustained as at the time of writing this report.

“Properties worth a fortune were destroyed in the inferno.

“The LASEMA Response Team, alongside Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were able to curtail the fire from escalating to adjoining buildings.

“The LRT and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, whilst fighting the fire, are simultaneously trying to manage the hostile crowd as the two are the only primary responders at the incident scene.

“Joint efforts are currently ongoing to swiftly extinguish the fire completely and salvage the remaining valuable properties.”

As of 1a.m, he said, “Search and Rescue Operation still ongoing. Update on the incident to follow.
