Policeman dies during clash with Okada riders

…Five arrested

CITIZENS COMPASS –An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has reportedly lost his life during a clash with a team of policemen and some commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders in the Agege area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that a heated argument among the policemen and Okada riders degenerated at an accident scene on Saturday morning.

According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, the emergency involved a truck and a commercial motorcyclist whereby the rider was crushed to death at WEMCO junction along Mobil Road.

The policemen who responded to a distress call were said to have met resistance from a group of motorcyclists who were bent on setting the truck ablaze.

This resulted into a clash and the ASP who led his team to the scene was killed in the process.

Spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the death saying five suspects have been arrested.

He said, “On getting to the scene, the team met a large number of motorcycle riders who had gathered around the place. However, the patrol team, in the process of evacuating the truck, came under attack by the riders who insisted on torching the truck, as a result of which one ASP, 46 years old, was injured on the head and died on the spot while the truck driver escaped.

“Five suspects have since been arrested, and manhunt for others is on.”
