Soldier kills policeman in Lagos 

 

CITIZENS COMPASS–A soldier from the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army (NA), who was apprehended for driving against traffic has angrily stabbed a personnel of the Lagos State Environmental and Special (Offenses) Unit (Taskforce) to death during an enforcement operation in the State.

The incident occurred at about 7a.m, at Volks Bus Stop, along the Ojo-Iyana Iba Road, in the early hours of Thursday.

The deceased, Inspector Saka Ganiyu with AP/No 223409 was with his colleagues enforcing the law prohibiting driving against traffic when the soldier who was in mufti stabbed him.

It was learnt that the Anti-One-Way team of the Taskforce, led by Superintendent of Police James Nnadi, apprehended a white T4 bus for driving against traffic. The bus, loaded with passengers, was said to be flagged down by the Taskforce officers.

Upon trying to effect the confiscation of the vehicle, the driver who was identified as a military personnel, was not in uniform.

As the arrest proceeded, the soldier created a scene, wielding dangerous weapons and viciously attacked and stabbed Inspector Saka Ganiyu on the right thigh.

It was gathered that despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Inspector Ganiyu was tragically pronounced dead.

Confirming the attack in a statement, spokesperson for the Taskforce, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem said, “The Lagos State Taskforce condemns this brutal and unwarranted attack on law enforcement officers who were dutifully carrying out their  legal responsibilities to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and maintain public order in the State. 

“‘The incident has been escalated to the State Police Command for immediate investigation, and justice will be pursued for the loss of our dedicated officer.

“The Lagos State Taskforce extends its deepest condolences to the family of Inspector Saka Ganiyu during this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, the headquarters of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army said the soldier has been arrested.
