APC wins Edo Governorship election with 291,667 votes

CITIZENS COMPASS–The All Progressives Congress (APC), has emerged the winner in the Edo State governorship election which was held on Saturday.

The Independent Electoral Commission(INEC), announced that the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, won the majority of the votes on Sunday.

INEC, after collating the results of 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) declared Okpebholo the winner of the election.

According to the announcement by INEC in Edo State, Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes while his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,655 votes.

Similarly, Olumide Akpata, representing the Labour Party (LP), came third with a total of 22,763 votes.

With this result, Okpebholo is well-positioned to be declared the official winner of the Edo State election.

Meanwhile, the PDP in Edo has appealed to the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to review the results collated for the governorship election before the final announcement of the winner of the election.

Dr Anthony Aziegbemi, PDP Chairman in Edo told newsmen on Sunday in Benin that the entries the electoral officers made were totally different from the actual results uploaded on the INEC IREV at the polling units.

Aziegbemi noted that the results had allegedly been inflated in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) through deducted votes from the PDP.

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC chieftains have congratulated the winner.

Earlier, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba, had chased out Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, out of the INEC premises in Benin.

He had entered the premises unannounced at about 2 a.m., allegedly to protest some anomalies in the collation of results of some local government areas including his Oredo but was chased out at about 3a.m.

It was learnt that APC Okpebholo, his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, led other protesters to demand the exit of Obaseki from the INEC office.

As he was being escorted out of the premises, mobile policemen deployed to the INEC office shouted at the governor, “Leave, leave.”
