CITIZENS COMPASS –A petroleum-laden tanker yesterday, exploded at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Fadeyi in Lagos.
This is just as many people were injured on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway down to Ikorodu road following the multiple accidents that occurred on the Kara Bridge of the Expressway.
Many road users were stranded for hours due to the traffic congestion following the accidents.
The NNPC fire outbreak occurred at about 7:24 p.m.
According to the Permanent Secretary, of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, “Upon the arrival of the Cobra Team to the scene of the incident, it was revealed that a tanker laden with registration number ABC 594 XC loaded with 45,000 litres of PMS was engulfed by fire.
“Further information revealed the fire started when the product was being discharged.
“However, the swift response of responders was fast enough to contain the fire without spreading to the adjourning building and also safeguarding the Filling station from being razed by the inferno.
“The fire has been put out while dampening down is in progress.
“Responders at the scene are Cobra Team, LRU fire, LASG fire and rescue, Lastma, Lasambus, Fed fire, and the NPF are all responders at the scene.”
Meanwhile, the Kara accidents involved a 40ft containerized truck, a luxurious bus with a number plate, KPP 921 ZW, belonging to Sopuru Chukwu Motors, a computer hiace bus, and a van used for commercial purposes.
It occurred in the afternoon inward Arepo leaving many road users stranded for hours.
Normally was later returned through the intervention of emergency responders.
In his updates, Osanyintolu said the rescue operation was concluded at about 5.19 p.m.
“The Agency received a distress call via the state emergency toll-free line 767/112 regarding a multiple road accident at Kara Bridge inward Arepo.
“Upon arrival of the Agency’s Response Team to the scene of the incident, it was discovered that there was a multiple road accident involving a forty feet containerized truck, a luxurious bus with registration number KPP 921 ZW belonging to Sopuru Chukwu Motors, a computer hiace bus and a van used for commercial purposes
“The emergency responders due to their prompt response were able to rescue the injured victims to the Accident and Emergency Center.
“In its bid to ease traffic congestion that had extended to Secretariat Bus-stop, the Agency’s Response Team swiftly utilized the Super-Metro provided by FRSC for recovery exercise, all vehicles and trucks were effectively recovered off the road and the road was restored to normalcy.
