CITIZENS COMPASS —The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo, yesterday, agreed to step down from the position. 

This was agreed upon after a stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday.  Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and other key stakeholders attended the meeting which took place at Government House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The video of the meeting went viral on Sunday evening which captured Oluomo and Zego announcing the outcome of the meeting to their fans.

Oluomo, who was dressed in a native attire, said that he has agreed to cede power to Mustapha Adekunle popularly known as Sego, the current Treasurer of the union in the state, and that he would contest as NURTW President.

He said that the decision and changes would take effect before the end of January 2024.

Sources at the meeting said that Oluomo was prevailed upon to contest for the presidency of the union since one of the factional presidents of the union Tajudeen Agbede is indisposed.

Other Lagos State representatives at the meeting were Sanwo- Olu’s Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Commissioner for Transportation, Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the governor on Transportation, Lagos State Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS in Lagos, Dapo Amao.

NURTW in Lagos State has been in crisis after some leaders of the union in the state passed a vote of no confidence on Oluomo a few days after he was re-elected for a second term a month ago.

It was gathered that Oluomo decided to step down after mounting pressure from some of his powerful friends and influential figures in Lagos including Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi.

Elegushi was said to have personally told Oluomo to step down or face imminent embarrassment from his loyalists.

It was further gathered that 80% of branch chairmen in Lagos have stopped remitting money to the coffers of the union resulting in Oluomo’s dwindling resources.

Oluomo, whose suspension from the union was lifted four months ago, ran into trouble after he accepted to be the acting chairman of the union at the South West level. 

The suspension order was lifted by Agbede, in his inaugural address in Abuja in August 2023. 

Citizens Compass reports that for the past two weeks, Zego’s loyalists have been dining and winning in preparation for his new office. 

A source in the union said Zego’s house had been a beehive of activities since he received information of the next move. 

He was said to have mandated some of his loyalists to work towards accomplishing the task. 

The source said Mc Oluomo and Zego had a verbal agreement about a succession bid but this was truncated by Oluomo for selfish purposes. 

On noticing this, Zego was said to have contacted some elders and government representatives to visit the agreement in order to avoid blood shed amonh fans.
