Lagos dislodges street traders around schools

CITIZENS COMPASS —Lagos State Government on Monday, November 20, 2023, dislodged some street traders around some schools in the State. 

The exercise was carried out by a special squad of operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) popularly known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI). 

This was disclosed by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources on Monday. 

The statement said during the exercise, the operatives also demolished shanties used by the street traders on the perimeter fences of the schools.

The affected schools are Ategbo Nursery and Primary School, ljegun Road, Old Garage Bus Stop, Ijegun, and the Local Government Primary School, Pako Bus Stop, Abaranje Road in the Ikotun area of the state.

The statement said that the dislodgement and demolition followed the expiration of “served statutory notices on clear breaches of the provision of the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management Planning Law.”

It said, “Following a widespread trend that is not only worrisome but very unacceptable about our school environment, Honourable Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, on Monday, gave a go-ahead for special squad operatives of LAGESC/KAI to dislodge street traders and demolish shanties on the perimeter fence of Ategbo Nursery and Primary School, ljegun Road, Old Garage bus stop, and Local Government Primary School, Pako bus stop, Abaranje road, Ikotun, Lagos State.

“The operation followed the expiration of served statutory notices on clear breaches of the provision of the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management Planning Law as it concerns illegal structures by the perimeter fence/roadside, erecting structures on the drainage alignment and operating in a filthy environment.”
