19 rescued, five dead, in boat mishap

 

CITIZENS COMPASS –Delta State Police Command on Tuesday, confirmed that no fewer than 19 family members were rescued, five others were reported dead and six persons were injured when a boat ferrying them across the waters capsized in the Warri South Local Government Area of the state.

The incident occurred on Friday in the remote Gbaramatu Kingdom of the state’s Warri South-West district.

Spokesperson for the Command, Sp Edafe Bright, confirmed this to newsmen in a brief.

He said emergency responders were still conducting a search and rescue operation to find a missing person.

According to him, the injured guests were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Warri.

The tragic incident involved a collision between two speedboats carrying family members returning from a burial ceremony.

The impact caused the boats to capsize, plunging passengers, who were mostly without life jackets, into the water.

Edafe confirmed that the mishap occurred, “along Bennett Island River in Warri South.

“Five found dead, six persons injured and still receiving treatment, nineteen persons rescued, one still missing.” He said
